Abstract:
Humankind has had instinct of protection by its very nature since his existence. Therefore, human has put up a wall around his shelter since the first ages to protect his family and food, then with the other human communities they lived together founded settlements and by ramparting these settlements for their protection they built the first castles. Which is home to a variety of cultures in the historical process in Izmir, it has maintained its importance from ancient times to the present day with its geopolitical position. Its that has been the scene of continuous settlement with the geopolitical advantages and harbors reason. Changing political increasing population and maritime trade, depending on the balance in Anatolia, the defense has made it more important, in parallel, began to be built the first city walls of the Hellenistic and defensive lines aimed at creating a secure garrison areas at certain points have been established. Construction of the castle and repairs to the Roman, Byzantine, Emirates and was continued in the Ottoman Period and cities, demonstrating the all period features of the defense architecture but also have included the construction of the structure reflects the gains that line of development in the historical process.
