Abstract:
FOCUSING ON PROBLEMATICS WITH TWO DISCIPLINARY APPROACHES THROUGH THE SAME SIGNIFIER: A STUDY OF INTERPRETING THE 'CINEMA AND DOCUMENTARY PRODUCTION' NAMED "LUNCH ON THE TOP OF A SKYSCRAPER" AND THE 'PHOTOGRAPHY' OF THE SAME NAME.
“Lunch on top of a skyscraper” which became an icon as a photograph and was later into a documentary film is is known to have been taken while the working class was having lunch on one of the very high beams of Rockefeller Center, the famous building of the period. Here, at that much high area, while eating, who are the twelve men giving a happy impression, is the sincere aspect real, was it an un-planned shot or the workers giving poses by intention? Is there a clear conclusion about the name of the person who took the photograph? Understanding the worker class will be easier if we look at photographs and documentaries while considering the economic crisis of the 1930's.
As we try to reach qualitative and inductive results by starting our research from the main signifier of Semiotics and expanding our method, the iconographic narratives behind this main signifier will gradually fall into place and the questions and problematics that remain in our minds with this signifier will gradually move towards resolution.
